Artwork Sneak Peek

Box art in progress - Sleuth side up

Box art in progress - Spirit side up

Dear Friends,
I wanted to share with you some of the art in progress by my artist, Karen Lewis. It’s still quite early in the process, but she’s starting to develop the characters and the box cover. I’ve asked her to spend time developing the character designs first, since there are a lot of style details that will come out of those designs and she’ll need to know how the characters look from a few angles for the manual illustrations. I wanted the box design to be symmetric since the game itself plays (roughly) symmetrically, and it’s designed to show two viewpoints to the same story.

I am still dragging my feet on creating playtesting prototypes because I am/was waiting on more character art, and because it takes a lot of work to set up the artwork for printing. I’m hoping I can have the prototype sent to the printer by the end of this year!

I’m feeling a bit better about my idea of laying smaller cards on larger ones for the Haunt mechanic. I recently got my copy of Return to Dark Tower. They have both playing card sized cards and mini cards as part of the game. I stacked the smaller card on top of the playing card and checked how easy it was to remove mini card without disturbing the card underneath. It seems to work fine.

The Original Dark Tower has a special place in my heart. The year it came out (1981), I begged my parents to buy it for me. It was what I would consider insanely expensive at the time and we didn’t have a ton of money. I thought it was a longshot, but I did get it for Christmas that year and I played the heck out of it. My seven year old self was ecstatic.

As it turns out, the sequel/remake (Return to Dark Tower) was also really expensive, but I treated myself after the second edition was released. It was not however, as expensive as buying a working copy of the original
