A Prototype for XOXO Fest
Over the last month I’ve been working on a prototype to show off at XOXO Fest in Portland (in a few days). It’s been quite a journey learning to use the printing and cutting equipment, making boxes of various sizes and testing out different materials. The art and visual design are about 1/2 done. Here’s some images of the process.
Trying out different box sizes. The art was designed for the square format, but I also wanted to try a flatter "classic" 80's style box as well, since this is the vibe for the game. The square box has more matte paper, which is gaining popularity, where the flat box has a satin finish to the paper.
Printed box interior and manual spread showing final illustration style. I love the way Karen's sketches look on the brown color of the chipboard. I'm not sure this is the final design, but I definitely want to do something with the box interior.
All the pieces together! The tri-fold board has been a lot to figure out. The paper thickness and hinge size matter a lot when getting the board to fold up flat. I need to come up with a better solution for making the tokens. Right now, the token process involves a lot of gluing, which will make putting together the testing versions (more) time consuming.
Abby the office cat!
Not my cat, but she lives in the building and sometimes sneaks into my office to roost on the high shelf and survey her new kingdom…
